Turn Off Utilities if Needed

Water Damage

Turn off utilities such as gas, electricity, and water if your basement has flooded. These utilities can pose significant hazards if they’re not turned off promptly.

Gas

  • Go to the main gas shut-off valve, which is typically located outside your house near the gas meter.
  • Using a wrench, turn the valve clockwise to close it.
  • Do not attempt to turn off the gas yourself if you smell gas. Call 911 immediately.

Electricity

  • Go to the electrical panel, which is usually located in the basement or garage.
  • Flip the main breaker to the “Off” position. This will cut off power to your entire house.
  • If you do not feel comfortable turning off the electricity yourself, call a qualified electrician.

Water

  • Go to the water main shut-off valve, which is typically located near the water meter.
  • Using a wrench, turn the valve clockwise to close it.
  • Make sure that all faucets in your house are turned off before turning off the water supply.
